Culture and the Paranormal
This is a talk I've been developing, off and on, for quite some time. It basically concerns the cultural roots of specific paranormal beliefs. It's kind like topical light anthropology.
Title: Culture and the Paranormal
Brief Description: The modern West is awash in the paranormal, from ghost hunting to alien abductions. The paranormal, however, is hardly relegated to modern times or the so-called "Western world." Different cultures across space and time have had their own conceptions of the paranormal, and not all are like ours. If we widen our gaze from contemporary Western beliefs about ghosts as espoused by the Ghost Hunters and others, we see that paranormal explanations for experiences generally draw almost exclusively from prevailing cultural narratives and fill in perceived holes to help explain the anomalous or extraordinary.
Speaker: Don Riefler
Date/Time: Friday afternoon, most likely
Length: 1 hour
Equipment needed: Laptop, projector, screen, and maybe a mic
